Legendary Creatures – Lin Jhih-syun Solo Exhibition
The evolution of human civilization stems from the expansion of "imagination." "Myths" and "traditions" are the best references left to us by our ancestors.
The Classic of Mountains and Seas, an ancient text from the pre-Qin period, is arguably one of the most imaginatively rich books in the history of Chinese civilization. It is filled with fantastical and magnificent descriptions of the universe and covers a wide range of topics including geography, animals, plants, religion, witchcraft, medicine, folklore, and history.
The earliest illustrations of the Classic of Mountains and Seas have been lost to time, and it wasn’t until the Ming and Qing dynasties that images of the rare and exotic creatures from the Classic of Mountains and Seas reappeared. Over the millennia, this remarkable book has continued to captivate readers.
Lin Jhih-syun has chosen the content of the Classic of Mountains and Seas as the subject for reinterpretation in his artwork. Using traditional Chinese brushes, ink, paper, and colors, he brings a modern perspective to create a new vision of the Classic of Mountains and Seas for the 21st century. His work is both traditional and novel, classical and contemporary, extraordinarily unique and genuinely intriguing. Lin Jhih-syun’s art dialogues with the purity of creation and the chaotic ancient times.
In Lin Jhih-syun’s mind, a new Classic of Mountains and Seas is in the making.
